The following are some of the issues surrounding GMF.
Bold terms are topics for those working alone. Those working in pairs should deal with all of the topics. SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN page 104
Environmental Issues Genetic diversity, Gene transfer to wild/other species - If the weather destroys your crops over night like say your crop of tomatoes Genetically modified foods can make it so substantial farmers can still sell plants. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAP6ZtfP9ZQ&NR=1
Economic Issues Patenting laws and fees - What Patenting laws do is they prevent someone from stealing or using the same crop as some other farmer. If your seed of GMF (like monsanto) blows into another crop then that is the raising of the crop is stealing. Monsanto is definetly a major example of this. http://www.csa.com/discoveryguides/gmfood/overview.php Ethical Issues
Violation of natural organisms' intrinsic values
Tampering with nature by mixing genes among species
Objections to consuming animal genes in plants and vice versa
Stress for animal
people have no idea what they are eating
Take (for example) someone who has allergies and they consume a product that has been genetically modified you have no clue if that person is about to digest the one thing that could kill them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLzELDt3d2I&feature=fvst This video is one of a man versing the giant monsanto company. Patenting laws and fees - Labeling (need for labeling) of GMF plants -
With Genetically Modified Foods how would a company label what their food is? This, of course, ties into the allergy point that I stated: you don't know what you would be consuming so it is uncertain if GMF are even that accurate. http://www.ornl.gov/sci/techresources/Human_Genome/elsi/gmfood.shtml
I have a question for every one to ponder about. As you may know corn is a wind pollination crop how could Monsanto control the wind how could anyone control the wind? Another thing is what about pollination by bees? Monsanto can't control bees or the patterns of bees. How is this a fair lawsuit if Monsanto is not taking into account of the bees or the wind?
Vocab List
Suicide Gene: in genetics, will cause a cell to kill itself through apoptosis.
Apoptosis: A form of cell death in which a programmed sequence of events leads to the elimination of cells without releasing harmful substances into the surrounding area.
